2023 Bill Text MN H.F. 2557 / S.F. 2654 - Introduced March 6, 2023*
This bill would require health carriers to provide coverage for medically necessary dental procedures resulting from cancer treatment, including evaluations, lab work, medications, and treatments. The mandate would apply to fully insured individual, small, and large group plans and the State Employee Group Insurance Program but exclude self-insured plans, Medicare, and public health programs. Dental conditions addressed include oral mucositis, tooth decay, gum disease, infections, and lesions—particularly common in head and neck cancer patients. The bill does not extend to routine preventive care. Due to data limitations, a full actuarial analysis was not possible, but the Department of Commerce estimates a potential state defrayal cost between $130,000 and $1 million in the first year.
