IL S.B. 1836 - Introduced February 6, 2002*

This bill proposed that the Illinois Department of Public Health, in consultation with dental care providers and subject to appropriation, develop and implement oral cancer educational programs focused on training healthcare providers to screen and refer patients with oral cancer and promoting smoking cessation, especially among high-risk underserved populations. It also mandated the creation of a pilot program offering screening, referral, and treatment for underserved adults, along with evaluation and data collection.

2017

IL S.B. 2043 - Introduced February 10, 2017*

This bill sought to expand Illinois' HPV vaccination program to include male children under 18, beginning in 2019, and required the Department of Public Health to provide information about the link between HPV and multiple cancers—including oropharyngeal cancer—in both sexes. The Department would have been required to establish eligibility, distribute vaccines, and adopt emergency rules for program implementation by July 1, 2018. Although the bill emphasized cancer prevention through vaccination and public education, it ultimately failed to advance.
